Automobile engineering, in particular, demands a passionate approach, otherwise, individuals risk becoming mere zombies in the industry. As an automobile engineer, I've witnessed numerous engineering students suffering with an "identity crisis" - they struggle to understand the essence of being an engineer and it’s not entirely their fault. Genuine, passionate mentors are a rare find in educational institutions. Students often find themselves confined to following prescribed course materials and meeting deadlines.
Engineering education, irrespective of the specialization, requires a proper introduction. Students must understand the key priorities essential for becoming valuable engineers. Regrettably, I've observed many colleges prioritizing useless activities and programs over initiatives that could genuinely enhance students' skill sets. The mentality often prevailing is that college life is an once-in-a-lifetime experience, leading to misplaced priorities. Consequently, numerous graduates, despite holding engineering degrees, find themselves without employment prospects or a clear career trajectory. This issue extends across all engineering disciplines.
At its core, the root cause of this problem lies in students' inability to grasp the true essence of engineering. Engineering is a continuous journey of learning; one never achieves perfection, as industries are perpetually evolving. To excel as an engineer, one must embody qualities such as innovation, resourcefulness, understanding, and unwavering focus. These attributes are what distinguish engineers of great value from the rest.
